It depends, but don’t close old cards blindly. Old cards help your credit history and total available limit, which can support your credit score.

If the card has zero annual fee and you can keep it safely, it’s usually better to keep it open. Just use it once in a few months for a small spend and pay in full, so it stays active. This keeps your credit history strong and utilisation low.

You should consider closing it if it has a high annual fee, poor benefits, or you find it hard to manage and you fear missing a payment. Also close it if you don’t trust the issuer’s service or you keep getting unwanted charges.

One more thing: if you close an old card, your total limit reduces, so your utilisation percentage can jump up, which can temporarily hurt your score. A safer approach is to first reduce usage on other cards, then close the one you don’t want.

Simple rule: keep old no-fee cards, close costly or risky ones.
